RE-INVENTING RADIO is part of a long tradition of innovative manifestations of radio-art, as they have been regularly produced since over 15 years by Ö1-Kunstradio, among others also in cooperation with the Ars Electronica Festival. These events and projects dealt with many different aspects of international radio-art in its most advanced form. The underlying definitions of radio-art were not so much based on notions such as Ars Acustica, Klangkunst or radiophonic music but rather on an artistic theory and practice which deals critically with the medium radio itself and its ongoing changes, especially those brought about by digitization: radio-art as New Media-Art.

Artists became aware of these changes at an early stage and reacted to them e.g. by developing new decentralized, networked and collaborative strategies of production and distribution, by “collaging“ old and new technologies and/or by creating temporary spaces of action, which are characterized by fluid transitions between differently administrated and institutionalized contexts and points of access. Doing this, and at the same time referring to a tradition which is almost as long as the history of the medium radio and its technologies, artists continuously and seriously question conventions and notions governing not only art but also the increasingly powerful and global media systems.
