M.o.M.A. Archive

John Sturgeon’s following early B&W, “reel to reel” - video masters - were loaned to The Museum of Modern Art, NYC in the fall of 1993 for their digital preservation program.

Unfortunately, these reels were poorly labeled, &/or in some cases unmarked: without the name of the artist, or title of the work. After the museum’s digital preservation program was put on hold, these works were stored off-site. Though M.o.M.A.’s Film & Video Department searched for them, they were unable to locate them.

Consequently, the artist considers these master videos to be “lost” even though they may be somewhere in museum’s storage as unlabeled, unidentifiable ½” video reels. Further complicating the retrieval of these works, the artist has no submasters or copies of them. Therefore, all these works have been completely missing from the artist’s personal archive since 1993.
